Okay, they’ve finally done it! After torturing teenagers all over India for over a decade with a ridiculously complicated two-tier entrance exam, IIT has made MAJOR changes to it’s JEE(Joint Entrance Exam, to un-IIT-iniated). First, the syllabus has been made parallel to school stuff, so you dont have to already be doing your bachelor’s to know everything that comes in the paper. Secondly, it’s a one-tier exam..no more screening followed by mains shit(Thank Heavens!!) and only two attempts..one in the same year as you pass-out of school and the year after that. GOOD!! People waste six years of their lives trying to get in. It gives them a good impetus to move on in life. People have protested outside IIT-Delhi, but we all know that these guys have been sent there by coaching centres or are people who’ve given it twice already. Ok, just let them write it one last time in 2006, that’s that. Good Move!!
I registered for the SAT to be taken on Oct 8. Got my passport yesterday, am a member of the United States Educational Foundation in India(USEFI). Now all I have to do is study! Its not that I’m afraid, just nervous… I mean in my last few practice tests, I’ve been scoring REAL BAD in the critical reading section. I got only 640 in CR, 680 in writing and 760 in Math. That’s just not enough!!! I feel worried, ‘coz I’m really not performing as I should be with regard to the aims I have in life. I just need to get my head down and put in some HARD WORK!!! Got my Chemistry Unit Test in a few days, must score above 35 and show these !@#$%^&*()_+| who’s the boss here!! Joined tutions for CBSE and am delighted at the new IIT format, just wish it’s implemented in 2006, but I’ll dedicate an entire post to that later. You cant know it, but i made A LOT of typo’s while getting this post in. My usual lapse of connection between thoughts and keyboard.
Okay, after victory comes defeat!! But what a defeat! imagine winning a series against Australia only to lose to Bangladesh in the next. Went to the HT Inquizzitive 2005. Was quite confident of qualifying after the written round, but wonder of wonders, I didnt make it. And when I saw the prizes, a Canon digi-cam and camcorder, Hyundai DVD player etc…wtf??? How did i not make it? And when I saw the teams that did leave sitters, I went mad! I knew more than 75% of the answers and i’m quite sure there’s some ‘golmaal’ involved. We deserved to make it. Hell, I even expected to top the prelims…how??…..For the first time in a quizzing career that streches over eight years….I cant believe it!!! This is bullshit….wtf???
August 12th 2005: Went to my first quiz in more than two years and was pleased to see that I’ve lost none of the old potency but have to improve on my gut instinct reading. It was the Times NIE Funda-Mental quiz organised by TOI, hosted by Derek’O’Brien. I went with pals Abhimanyu and Vaibhav, clearly carrying the team on my shoulders. Reached the venue only to see DPS-RKP’s team at the gate. I wasn’t intimidated a bit. Wasn’t well either. had been suffering from Viral and Stomach Cramps for the past two days. Was awake since 3am and was only survivng on glucose water and antacid gels. The quiz was your normal thing. teams tense while the schools without good brains brought vast cheering contingents(why have I never seen the same school win the cheering award and the quiz?) We answered the written prelims and enjoyed some TOI clips. I thought that we had a slight chance in the prelims. We made it ! Team 4 . The irony was lovely, a KV in between Delhi’s two biggest and snobbiest private schools, DPS-RKP and Mother’s Intl. We were pretty ok. Kept up with DPS from the start. had a heard a lot about these guys but was a bit disappointed as I feel my old Bethany team could have given them a good time(Sohan and Mithra). Anyways, we won but DPS weren’t very friendly. They thought there was a scoring error(yeah, right!) Anyways, we lifted the trophy had a lot of photots taken and realised that I am Mr.Anti-Photogenic. A Very Good Day!!
